Password Strength Checker
Check a password's strength against common criteria, entirely in your browser.
How to use the Password Strength Checker
- Type the password you want to test. It never leaves your browser.
- Click Run to see a strength rating from Very weak to Very strong.
- Review which checks passed and failed, and strengthen the password accordingly.
How the Password Strength Checker works
The checker runs seven tests: at least 8 characters, at least 12 characters, uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, special characters, and whether the password appears in a list of the most commonly used passwords. The share of tests passed is turned into a rating on a five-point scale.
Length matters most. Each extra character multiplies the number of combinations an attacker must try, so a long passphrase of random words usually beats a short password full of symbols. Never reuse a password across sites; use a password manager and the Password Generator instead.
