How the Fuel Economy Converter works
Miles per gallon and kilometers per liter measure distance per unit of fuel, while liters per 100 km measures fuel per unit of distance. Because they are inverses of each other, the conversion isn't a simple multiplication: L/100km = 235.215 ÷ MPG (US), so halving fuel consumption doubles MPG.
US and UK gallons also differ: a US gallon is 3.785 liters and an imperial (UK) gallon is 4.546 liters, so the same car scores about 20% higher MPG in the UK. Zero can't be converted, since it would mean infinite consumption.
